Woman turns herself in to police after three-year-old child dies in Melbourne hit-and-run

A 73-year-old woman has handed herself in to police after a three-year-old boy was killed in an alleged hit-run on Thursday evening in Melbourne’s west.

The three-year-old Sunshine North boy was critically injured and tragically passed away later in hospital overnight. The woman from Heathcote Junction handed herself in to police this morning and will be interviewed later today.

Police believe the boy, who had recently been collected from childcare and was travelling home with his mother, ran onto McIntyre Road in Sunshine North about 6.30pm on Thursday, when he was hit by a red sedan that failed to stop.

The red sedan was last seen travelling north on McIntyre Road. Police have seized the vehicle that will undergo forensic testing.

Detectives from the major collision investigation unit are appealing for the driver to come forward, and will address the media at 10.30am.
