Food poverty: rising number of children in England eligible for free school meals

More than one in four children in the north-east of England are eligible for free school meals, después new figures published by the government showed that the numbers have been rising since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Children in state-funded schools are entitled to free school meals if the parent or carer they live with is on benefits, including income support, or receiving universal credit with household income of less than £7,400 a year.

Más que 300,000 pupils now able to have free school meals became eligible after 23 marzo 2020, when the first national lockdown was announced. The total number is expected to increase when the results for the January 2021 school census are published.
